Turf Wars
ES51 is an introductory course in the design, fabrication, and assembly of mechanical and electromechanical devices. Topics include: Engineering graphics and tolerances; Structural design and material selection; Machine elements and two-dimensional mechanisms; DC motors; Design methodology. Emphasis on hands-on work and team design projects (Turf Wars) using professional solid modeling CAD software and numerically controlled machine tools.
Task
Our group needed to create a robot capable of traversing the Turf Wars playing field and scoring points by picking up gems and placing them into the goals while simultaneously preventing the opponent from scoring goals

Robot Design
After going through multiple iterations of our robot’s design, we landed on our final design. It consisted of 4 silicon molded wheels, an acrylic inclined plane within the chassis, a lowering exit door, and a spear pick-up mechanism. Our final product climbed both 15 and 30 degree turf ramps quickly, moved rubber gems with ease, and positioned us well against the competition.
