Abstract
Robotics is one of the most in-demand professions in the world but is also one of the least diverse STEM careers, with Black, Hispanic, and female workers highly underrepresented. This disparity begins as early as grade school, with high barriers to entry, such as high costs and ingrained stereotypes, contributing to these communities’ lack of exposure to robotics. The primary goal of this project is to create an affordable and accessible soft robotics kit that can be readily used by middle school students and educators to aid in the implementation of introductory robotics education. The kit should balance student engagement with ease of use and smartly engineered components.
